The Ultimate Masculine Card: A Miura Fold Showstopper

Masculine card
The masculine birthday card that is also an amazing 3D display piece.

What if a handmade card could be more than a card? What if it could also be a 3D display piece, an interactive project, and a birthday surprise all rolled into one?

That was my goal with this masculine birthday card — and I have to say, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!

This Miura Fold card is definitely a showstopper. It folds flat like a card, but when it is opened, it creates an impressive three-dimensional display (well, this particular one is more bulky than a card because of the dimension of the gears, I mailed it in a box) and I had a LOT of fun taking the basic fold and making it my own.

A Masculine Card with Gears, Texture & Movement

Full credit for the Miura Fold design goes to fellow Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator Tami White. I followed her tutorial for the unique fold and then took it in a completely different direction.

I wanted to create something distinctly masculine, so I reached for the Gears & Textures Stamp & Die Bundle. The gears, industrial textures, and deep navy color palette were perfect for the look I had in mind.

But I didn’t stop there!

I took this masculine card to the next level by adding the Echoes of Detail Hot Foil Dies and incorporating the new Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System. The metallic details add even more dimension and texture to the design.

And then came my favorite part…

This Masculine Card MOVES!

I made three of the gears into interactive spinners, so they actually turn!

See the movement of the gears

There is just something so satisfying about adding movement to a handmade card. It takes a project from “That’s a pretty card” to “Wait…THE GEARS MOVE?!” 😄 I purchased the ‘spinners’ from Amazon.

I’ve included several photos so you can see the card from different angles, along with a video showing the spinning gears in action.

A Special Birthday Card for My Son

This card was made especially for my son, whose initials are JB. That made the large “JB” centerpiece particularly meaningful.

And the best part?

After he received the card, he sent me the sweetest text. ❤️

That is one of the reasons I love making handmade cards. The time spent designing, cutting, stamping, die-cutting, and assembling a project like this is completely worth it when you know it made someone feel special.

So Many Possibilities for Masculine Cards!

If you struggle with ideas for masculine cards, I hope this project gives you some inspiration.

Gears and industrial textures make it easy to create a masculine look, but you certainly don’t have to stop there. This same basic concept could be adapted for a birthday card, Father’s Day card, graduation card, retirement card, anniversary card, or just about any special occasion.

And adding an interactive element — like spinning gears — makes the card even more memorable.

The combination of the Miura Fold, gears, metallic accents, hot foil details, texture, and interactive elements makes this one of my favorite masculine card projects I’ve created.

Below, I’ve listed the primary Stampin’ Up! products I used to create this card. The cake and candles are from the retired Piece of Cake stamp set with coordinating punch.

And if you’re looking for a masculine card idea that is anything but ordinary…this one might just be the ultimate!

Embossing paired with Washi Tape

The Stone & Vine 3D Embossing Folder makes such a beautiful background. I especially love it with the Two-Tone Old Olive 12X12 Cardstock I used here. I think it pairs really well with the Extraordinary Flora Washi Tape used in this card, and this is NOT your grandmothers washi tape. This is NEXT LEVEL, with a coordinating die to cut out each image!
