Mastering the Shimmer Blend: Watercolor Pencils + Wink of Stella
If you love coloring stamped images but want smoother blends, softer shading, and a little extra sparkle this technique is for you. In today’s Technique Time, I’m sharing my Shimmer Blend method, which replaces traditional water blending with the Wink of Stella Glitter Brush. Not only does this simplify the coloring process, but it also adds a soft, shimmery finish that instantly elevates your handmade cards. This technique works beautifully for florals, critters, and detailed stamped images, making it a versatile option you’ll reach for again and again.
Step-by-Step Learning in the Video Tutorial
In the video tutorial, I walk you through the Shimmer Blend technique step by step, sharing tips that help you get consistent, beautiful results every time. You’ll learn how to apply watercolor pencil pigment, how to blend using the Wink of Stella Glitter Brush, and how to clean your brush between colors to keep everything crisp.
I also show how to carry the design from the card front to the inside and envelope, creating a finished project that feels cohesive and complete.
What Is the Shimmer Blend Technique?
The Shimmer Blend is a coloring technique that combines watercolor pencils with the Wink of Stella Glitter Brush instead of a water painter or blender pen. Rather than introducing water to move the pigment, the Wink of Stella gently activates and blends the watercolor pencil, giving you more control and a subtle sparkle at the same time.
Because the glitter brush applies less moisture than traditional blending tools, the paper stays smoother, colors remain vibrant, and the finished image has a soft glow instead of a flat or overworked look.
Featured Project: Soft Floral Shimmer Card
For this tutorial, I’m using the Fragrant Layers Stamp Set to create soft, glowing florals that really show off the Shimmer Blend technique. The layered floral images are perfect for watercolor pencils, and the Wink of Stella brings the petals to life with gentle dimension and shimmer.
To add interest and texture, I paired the coloring technique with the Lovely Stripes 3D Embossing Folder, creating a beautiful balance of soft color and structured detail. This combination is simple but incredibly effective for cards that feel special without being complicated.
